Animal Crossing in The Time of Covid

Date(s) - Friday 7/16/2021 1:30 PM - Friday 2:30 PM
Description

COVID-19 has put a huge damper in our lives in 2020. Many plans for that year were cancelled or postponed. However, one video game stood out during that troubling time: Animal Crossing. Since its’ release last year, the latest installment in the 20-year old franchise, New Horizons, has brought people together while being apart. While the game is known for crafting items, visiting others, and being chased by wasps after shaking trees, many people had creative ways to celebrate different things while being at home during the pandemic. From graduations to birthday parties to even conventions, using Animal Crossing to come together has been a very useful tool. This panel will discuss the history of the game from it’s days of being known as the last N64 titles in Japan to an all time classic, as well as how people and companies used the game to connect to the world when real life borders were closed.
