Polyamory in Anime: the good, the bad, the dumpster fires

Date(s) - Sunday 8/21/2022 8:30 AM - Sunday 10:00 AM
Description

From an inordinately young age, humans are taught having romantic feelings for more than one person at the same time is wrong. Anime finds ways to challenge this assumption by allowing some usually dry self-insert dude whose eyes usually aren’t animated to create a network of people who want to date them. But why? Is it possible to learn this power? Come and find out! We’ll look at how polyamory works in our world and compare to how anime interprets these relationships: correctly or otherwise. You’ll learn about the basics of rules a polyamorous person should follow, different styles of polyamorous relationships, some neat words you can flex, and common pitfalls polyamorous relationships tend to have. What better way to meet people at an anime convention than dealing with your feelings? Heavy spoiler warnings for: Date A Live; Kanojo mo Kanojo / Girlfriend, Girlfriend; Mushoku Tensei / Jobless Reincarnation; HameFura / My Next Life As A Villainess

Panel Rules / Guidelines

The intent of the panel is to provide more awareness to the polyamorous lifestyle, not to convince anyone polyamory is the right choice for them. While we will be mentioning best practices associated with having multiple romantic partners, we will not be exploring the topic from a lewd angle (unless you count hand-holding). We marked this panel as PG-13 panel because OUR content is safe to anyone that has taken middle school health, don’t ruin it for everyone.

1) Please refrain from making lewd comments and euphemisms when asking panelists questions unless it relates to clinical sexual wellness

2) We will be talking about some ecchi anime because of how polyamory is represented but we view and discuss the character relationships, not the fanservice

3) Be respectful when asking our panelists questions. Polyamory is a choice based on personal opinions so you may disagree with the content in the panel and that is okay

4) The panelists are not licensed relationship coaches or psychologists. We are well-informed but we are not academic experts

5) Polygamy is illegal in the state of Texas. We are NOT advocating for marrying multiple persons.

6) it’s only weird if you make it weird
