Yoko Taro: An Auteur in Gaming
Date(s) - Saturday 7/17/2021 4:30 PM - Saturday 5:30 PMDescription
The auteur theory goes back to around the mid 1900s as French film critics sat the central control and creative vision of a film on the shoulders of the director, giving that director’s films a distinct style that commonly repeats from one film to the next (think of the style for any film by Hitchcock, or Quentin Tarantino). With the rise of video games as a creative medium, the theory is now being extended out to directors within gaming such as Yoko Taro, made famous by his work on the Drakenguard and NieR franchises. I want to explore Taro as an auteur and how his direction shapes each of his works to stand out from the sea of other video games.
